Series 3: St. Louis Streets, Buildings, and Landmarks

Series 3 contains photographic prints and film negatives depicting St. Louis streetscapes, buildings, and landmarks. The series starts with street views arranged alphabetically by street (e.g.: Chestnut, Locust), continues with depictions of individual buildings arranged by building name (e.g.: Mercantile Library, Wainwright), and then ends with categorical folders (e.g.: hotel exteriors, residences, rooftop views) arranged alphabetically. The prints measure less than 10 inches by 10 inches. Some photos are dated, ranging from the 1870s to the early 1900s.

Photograph of St. Louis from the top of the courthouse looking west. On the left, looking down Market, the Grand Opera House is visible. The opera house was built in 1885 on the site of a previous theater. The police department's Four Courts building is visible in the distance just above the opera house. In the center of the photograph at some distance are two tall buildings. The one on the left is the Missouri Pacific Building on Market, also called the Buder Building, which occupied the St. Louis skyline from 1902 to 1984. The one on the right is the Lincoln Trust Building which stood from 1897 to 1983. To the right of the Lincoln Trust Building, across Chestnut street is the Wainwright Building.

Grand Avenue Hotel
Photograph of the Grand Avenue Hotel at the southeast corner of Grand and Olive. A restaurant occupies the ground floor where "HYDE PARK BEER [is] ON TAP" along with the L. H. Gerardi grocery store. A horse-drawn carriage for the grocer is visible on the street.

Photograph of Locust Street looking west from Fourth Street toward Broadway. The four story building on the right is Odd Fellows' Hall, home to the firm of Mermod, Jaccard, & Co. The large building on the left with the projecting cornice and chimney belonged to Daniel W. Bell. The edge of the St. Louis Mercantile Library's first building is visible on the left across Broadway.
Mercantile Club
Photograph of the Mercantile Club at Seventh and Locust in St. Louis. It later became home to the American Trust Exchange Bank and the firm of William R. Compton and Company occupied the upstairs.

National Bank of Commerce
6.25x9 in photograph of the National Bank of Commerce building in St. Louis. The National Bank of Commerce was one of the largest banks west of Chicago in the late nineteenth century and was known in the 20th century as Commerce Bank.

Odean Theater
9.25x6.75 in photograph of the Odean Theater at 1038 N. Grand Avenue in St. Louis. It was built as a masonic temple in 1904 and was later home for the Saint Louis Symphony.

Old Union Trust Building
7x9 in photograph of the Union Trust Building in St. Louis. On the back "Central National Bank Building" is written in pencil. This fourteen-story building at Seventh and Olive was designed by Louis Sullivan and built in 1892, at which time it became the tallest building in St. Louis. The terracotta details around the circular windows present in this photograph were removed during renovations in the 1920s. The old post office is visible in this photograph further west down Olive Street.

Olympic Theatre Building
9.25x7.25 in photograph of the Olympic Theatre Building. The first Olympic Theatre was built in 1866. That building was demolished in 1882, to be replaced by this one. The site is on Broadway between Walnut and Elm opposite the Southern Hotel and adjacent to the St. James Hotel.
Parlor at the Southern Hotel
Photograph of the parlor of the Southern Hotel in St. Louis. The carpeted room features plush wooden furniture, curtained entrances, a fireplace, gilded wallpaper, and electric chandeliers.
