Photograph of the Columbia Club on Lindell west of Vandeventer. Writing on the back of the photograph indicates that this building was later home to the Automobile Club. The Columbia Club was a Jewish social institution.
The thirteenth annual Get-Together of the Czechoslovak Society of America, 1949. The Get-Together took place at National Hall located on Dolman and Allen avenues. National Hall was built in 1890, and it was the home of the lodges of several Czech benevolent organizations, including what is now CSA Fraternal Life which was previously known as the Czechoslovak Society of America. The National Hall was torn down in the 1960s due to interstate highway construction. This image was donated to the St. Louis Mercantile Library by the Gymnastic Association Sokol.
The Eagle Boat Store in 1895. At that time a large figurehead, seen at the right, stood beside the door. Where the figurehead came from and where it went is a mystery. It may have ben from the Steamer Lady Gay which sank in 1870.
The Eagle Boat Store was founded in 1839 according to lettering on picture of Ward and Brady Boat Store. Lockwood and Wider sold to Capt. James Ward whose
Burning Excursion Str. ISLAND QUEEN after explosion at a Pittsburgh wharf September 1947. Fuel tanks exploded resulting in the destruction of the boat and loss of 19 lives.
