Ava Gardner and Burt Lancaster celebrated completion of their starring roles in Mark Hellinger's production of Hemingway's "The Killers" with a day at Santa Monica Beach. Sultry Ava, born in North Carolina and raised bare-foot, challenged ex-circus acrobat Lancaster to a hand-lock race which ended in a dead heat. "The Killers" is Burt's first motion picture and his portrayal of tragic Swede is expected to boost him to overnight stardom (from photo caption).
