A studio portrait of a serious unidentified African American man standing with his hat held low in his right hand as his left arm rests across the back of an upholstered chair. He has a mustache and beard. He wears an overcoat over a three-piece suit. The top button of the suit jacket is buttoned just below a bow tie and over a buttoned vest. Printed below the photograph, "M. P. Thiele, Wing's Gallery, 62 Canal St. Grand Rapids, Mich."
