Ava Gardner and Burt Lancaster in "The Killers"
-
The atomic glow in the western sky isn't from Bikini. It's coming from Hollywood where Ava Gardner has been making love to Burt Lancaster in Mark Hellinger's production of "The Killers." Based on the Ernest Hemmingway story, the film is full of danger and dramatics, violent romance and rugged action. It's a kiss of death Ava gives to Lancaster, since he, playing the role of Swede, is a bank robber and mobster who comes to a bullet-ridden end because of her. Lancaster makes his first film appearance in "The Killers." He is an ex-circus acrobat, ex-G.I. and ex-Broadway actor who is co-starred with Ava and Edmond O'Brien in the Hellinger production (from photo caption)., 1946, Digitizing agency: University of Missouri--Kansas City. Ava Gardner and Burt Lancaster in "The Killers"
-
Ava Gardner and Burt Lancaster celebrated completion of their starring roles in Mark Hellinger's production of Hemingway's "The Killers" with a day at Santa Monica Beach. Sultry Ava, born in North Carolina and raised bare-foot, challenged ex-circus acrobat Lancaster to a hand-lock race which ended in a dead heat. "The Killers" is Burt's first motion picture and his portrayal of tragic Swede is expected to boost him to overnight stardom (from photo caption)., 1946, Digitizing agency: University of Missouri--Kansas City. Ava Gardner in "The Killers"
-
Ava Gardner, that long-limbed and lovely lass from the South who is getting her best acting opportunity to date in Mark Hellinger's production of "The Killers" at Universal Studio, is a gal with a problem. Only 21, she hasn't made up her mind whether a home and home life are more important than her career - or vice versa. Currently separated from band leader Artie Shaw, her second husband (Mickey Rooney was her first), she and Shaw found that her working hours from early morning to evening and his night-time orchestra hours were just not conducive to domestic happiness. Ava co-stars with Edmond O'Brien and screen find Burt Lancaster in "The Killers" (from photo caption)., 1946, Digitizing agency: University of Missouri--Kansas City. Library. Dr. Kenneth J. LaBudde Special Collections., Printed in USA - Copyright 1946, Universal Pictures, Inc. - Permission granted for newspaper and magazine reproduction.

King is hardly blue as he sizes up the broccoli he sets a' simmering during his guest spot on the premiere program of "Feeling Good," the new prime-time health series that debuts November 20 on the 250 Public Broadcasting Service stations (8pm EST, 7 Central). "Feeling Good," a series of 26 one-hour programs, is considered the most ambitious effort ever undertaken by television to inform and motivate viewers towards healthier living. The shows make their health points in a variety of entertaining and dramatic ways: comedy, satire, songs, animation, and short documentaries.
