"Mrs. Sarah Josepha Buell Hale has her place in history as the "Mother of Thanksgiving Day." Novelist and editor of several women's magazines she campaigned for more than 30 years urging the adoption of her native New England festival as a national public holiday. President Lincoln agreed, proclaimed the first official Thanksgiving Day in 1864. Mrs. Hale died in Philadelphia in 1879."
School Teachers Take a Look
School teachers take a look at business and industrial operations in the St. Louis area. On a visit to the Globe-Democrat, they watch Stephen C. Tammany, compositor, assemble a page of type. The occasion was the second Business-Education day sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce,with 79 firms playing host to more than 1600 teachers from 53 public, parochial and private high school in St. Louis and St. Louis County.
Searchlights Trained on Planes
"U.S. Flyers Winners in Night Battle at Fortress Monroe./Airmen are claiming a decisive victory in the "Battle in the Air" arranged by Secretary of War Weeks at Fortress Monroe, Va. day and night of March 6th. Three Martin bombers dodged range finders, evaded searchlights and successfully attacked fortress Monroe. More than 500 persons witnessed the demonstration. In the night tests, the flyers won, the shafts of light groping vainly for the motors that the listening devices revealed./This photo shows searchlights at Fortress Monroe being trained on planes."

After the type has been assembled and corrected, it goes to the form of a page upon which it is to appear. Here a makeup man is shown placing type into the form. Engravings are also fitted into the eight-column steel chase before it is locked up and pushed on its way.

Soldier Transport Ship
"Transport Crook Arrives Safely./The disabled transport Crook, bearing 30 German war brides and nearly 1,000 officers and men of the American Army of Occupation on the Rhine has arrived safely in port. The ship sprung a leak while of the Newfoundland Banks and then ran into a severe storm but it crept into port distaining the aid that was sent as soon as advices of its predicament were received./Photo shows: - The doughboys were glad when the experience was over."

"Their First Real Yankee Pie in 18 Months./Three happy doughboys just off a transport from France, whose first "official" act after disembarking is to purchase three man-size pies, and proceed to "go to it". Pies are a rarity over there, and oh, boy, how one can appreciate this toothsome bit of pastry after eighteen months of "pieless" existence." Soldiers were fed "chow" two times a day from the company kitchen.
