1937 - Inside the northwest addition of Ellis Library
Summary
Inside the Northwest wing of the "General Library," additional areas created space and increased facilities available to the students at the University of Missouri. Importantly, it eliminated the use of the poorly ventilated reading room used by first year students beforehand.

1961 - Inside the northeast addition of Ellis Library
Summary
In the top photo, students sort through reference cards. These cards contain bibliographic data of the library's resources to assist in finding certain texts. This room was considerably important in 1961 since most books were rearranged upon construction of the new wing. The photo on the bottom left lends a perspective of a librarians point of view in the northeastern addition. Students could come here for navigation in the new addition.

1892 - Burning of the University of Missouri
Summary
The Columns weren't always just columns. Before Jesse Hall was erected, "Academic Hall" stood at the epicenter of campus and its activities. However, in 1892, this building burned down, leaving the six columns.

1953 - Planning the south wing of Memorial Union
Summary
This drawing from the 1953 edition of the Savitar proposes a look at the completed Memorial Union. At the time, though, on the north wing had been built. Only in 1962, with the addition of the south wing, would Memorial Union resemble this drawing.

2003 - The end of Hearnes Center
Summary
In 2003, Hearnes center had been home to MU athletics for almost four decades. However, at the time, Mizzou Arena was under construction and scheduled to open in 2004. This is one of the Savitar's last looks at Hearnes.

1920 - Planning construction of Memorial Union
Summary
The 1920 Savitar shows a sketch of the prospective "Student Union." The monument was erected in honor of the former students who lost their lives during the World War I. Construction on the tower began three years later.

2003 - Tiger Walk at the Columns
Summary
The University holds the annual Tiger Walk event. Every year before school starts, freshmen symbolize their integration into the University through walking through the Columns.

1935 - The northwest addition to Ellis Library
Summary
The 1936 Savitar displays a drawing of the prospective addition to the library. Construction began in 1935.This addition added fire-proof, stack space for books, reading rooms, seminar rooms and other library necessities.

1930 - Track at Brewer Fieldhouse
Summary
The opening of Brewer Fieldhouse allowed runners to practice regardless of weather. Different teams--track, football, basketball--shared the Field House according to the seasons of the year. With the addition of the field house, the track team season started at the end of the football season, continuing to the end of school. In years before, however, all the athletes could do before warm weather was maintain their condition. The extra practice was a deciding factor in many meets.

1904 - Construction of Rothwell Gymnasium
Summary
Constructed in 1904, Rothwell originally cost the University $70,000. Originally, the building was three stories high in the front and two stories high in the back, and the construction was engineered for later additions. Materially, the entire building had hardwood floors and the walls were built with gray stone.

1972 - Opening of Hearnes Center
Summary
Brewer Fieldhouse held around 6,000, and with incoming enrollment, students demanded a new and larger basketball arena. With the Hearnes Center, 12,600 could be seated.

1930 - Memorial Union Tower
Summary
This picture from the 1930 displays the complete construction of the original tower. However, the tower stood alone for quite sometime. It wasn't until 1950 that the north wing would finally come about.

1892 - Burning of the original Academic Hall
Summary
In 1892, The University of Missouri's original Academic Hall burned down, leaving six columns. People say that the fire had been caused by the first electric light bulb west of the Mississippi River. The fire even spread as far as the Chancellor's Residence, but no significant damage was caused to it. "New" Academic Hall--later called Jesse Hall--was constructed in 1893. The Columns stand today as the iconic remains of the original Academic Hall.

Much construction occurred in 1998, revitalizing Jesse's look. The dome was repainted and remodeled, and extra exterior repairs were made. This part of Jesse can be seen almost anywhere around campus.

1930 - Basketball inside Brewer Fieldhouse
Summary
Brewer-Fieldhouse was named after Chester L. Brewer, a football, baseball, and basketball coach for Missouri in the early 20th century. In 1923, Brewer became the Director of Athletics at the University, and his past with Mizzou athletics brought a lot of vitality to the campus. The field house joined Rothwell Gymnasium and extended into Rollins Field, and the complex allowed basketball and track teams to practice during times of the year when they originally could not. The structure protected athletes from cold weather and rain, and ability to train during these cases pushed Mizzou to a new era of athletics.

Summary
Taken from the 1915 edition of The Savitar, this page details the need for a new, separate library due to Academic Hall's inability to house the rising number of books. Construction of Ellis began in 1913.
