Since that period the earth has been overrun with violence and oppression. Nations have been deluged in blood, and whole cities laid in ruins by their unrelenting cruelty and oppression. Soon

[Page] 22 unbounded oppression, and sinks human nature almost below the brutal creations! Europe long ago expelled the celestial inhabitant; and in succession, that despotic tyrant Slavery entered her dimensions. From that fatal moment, a sudden gloom overspread the face of nature. Her empire began to decline, and all her glory and former excellence seemed to be extinguished. Commerce and Manufacture, which before were rapidly increasing, felt the dreadful shock; and every work, which tends to enrich a nation and make it happy, was interrupted, and begun to decay. Those Arts and Sciences, by which mankind are distinguished, and exalted to such preeminence above the rude and uncultured savage, were neglected and every thing seemed to predict some dreadful catastrophe at hand. At this dismal period, when tyranny

[verso] {..} defect of the sun's light. Several satellites or moons revolve around them in different spaces of time, so that there is no time, night nor day, in which all the sides of these planets may not enjoy the light of some of the moons. The earth has but one moon, from which it receives numberless advantages; but Jupiter has four and Saturn Seven; which seems calculated to give light to the inhabitants supposed to reside on it. But, though the planets may be fit for habitation, it will, perhaps, seem difficult to some to conceive how any beings could exist on the comets, which approach so near the sun at one time, and then recede such an astounding space from him, as they certainly do, at another. But I do not see why they may not be fit for habitation. For the tail of a comet appears to be its atmosphere; which at is perihelion, is so rarified, that the stars are visible through them,

[recto] hope for better times, which never arrive; and pass their whole lives, without pursuing any resolute course of action, or accomplishing any business, which might contribute to hasten the happy times they expect. Others place too much confidence in themselves, and from a vigorous exertion of their abilities, expect more success than generally attends the most fortunate adventures. They are sensible that many obstacles obstruct their way; yet hoping that fortune will favor them, and remove the difficulties, they undertake greater schemes than dilligence (sic) or ambition can perform: And though their labor may be of service to posterity, they find themselves worn out with toils and hardships before the happy period arrives, or their favorite schemes are brought to perfection.

But when they recede from the sun, the atmosphere grows more dense; and it is probable, that when at the greatest distance from the sun, it grows so condensed round the body of the planet, that there may be sufficient quantities

[verso] No. XII. March 9, 1796. Vindication of Drunkenness. To Mr. Tiply Ebriosus. Sir, I have heard you have lately been insulted by some ungrateful persons in your neighborhood, for getting drunk. And having myself heard several exclaiming bitterly against a habit, which they are pleased to call a vice, I thought I would write to you on this subject, to encourage you to persevere
