The J. K. Graves was built at Dubuque, Iowa in 1885 for the Weyerhaeuser and Denkmann fleet located at Rock Island, Illinois. She was the last of that fleet. She had a good steel hull but was too narrow and top heavy which evenutally led to her loss when she capsized. As she was ascending the upper rapids of the Mississippi River on August 10, 1894, she struck a rock in the channel and sank in about 12 feet of water. She was raised and repaired at a cost of $2000. Later she was sold to some Cairo, Illinois parties and on June 10, 1898, while lying at the bank of the Cairo, she was swamped and sunk from heavy swells caused by a high wind. She was valued at $10,000 and was raised and repaired. On May 3, 1900, while enroute from Helena, Arkansas to Peter's Landing, Arkansas, and when near Walnut Bend Landing, Arkansas, from some unknown cause she capsized and sunk, a total loss, $10,000. A fireman, one cook and the chamber maid were drowned.
