The Coal City was an old Pittsburgh towboat built in 1864 at Brownsville, Pennsylvania. Her dimensions were 170 x 32.4 x 4.9 feet; tonnage, 361. While lying at her landing on the Ohio River, near Saw Mill Run, she was discovered on fire about 8:30 A.M., October 24, 1900. She burned and sank but was later repaired; loss $30,000. On November 29, 1900 she sank two coal boats on the pier at Hartford, West Virginia, loss, $2500. While ascending the Ohio River with an empty tow, she struck a snag near Vanceburg, Kentucky, and sank on November 28, 1903. The Relief from Cincinnati went to her assistance the early part of Decemeber 1903. Four divers worked on the wreck and she was raised and repaired for $3000. In January 1901 she towed 24,750 tons from Cincinnati to Louisville. The tow composed of 41 pieces was 1005 feet long and 182 feet wide. In December 1905, she arrived in Cincinnati with 20 coal boats of coal and struck the pier of the Chesapeak and Ohio Railroad bridge sinking 10 of the boats. Her horse power was 1000.
