The Helen E. was originally built as a single decker at Point Pleasant, West Virginia in 1913. Her dimensions were:- 105 by 19.7 by 2.8 feet; 33 tons. In January, 1918, she distinguished herself by running away from Point Pleasant in an ice gorge and was not captured until she reached Madison, Indiana, 292 miles below. She ran all bridge piers, passes at the dams, etc., with nobody aboard and made a good job of it; worst damage was from vandals who stripped her when she was near shore, taking all available brass fittings, equipment, etc. In 1918 Captains Sam and Jim Williamson bought this boat, aded a cabin, and ran her in the Wheeling-Matamoras trade for the next ten years. She ran regular as clock work and was always clean, freshly painted and trim looking. In 1921 she received a new battery of boilers at the Acme Boiler Works shop in Galipolis, Ohio. Later she became the towboat Clerimond.
