Gravure Pictorial. \"Their flags and pennants snapping in the brisk fall wind, these federal Barge Lines towboats, being provisioned at the Carr street landing, are anxiously awaiting departure time for the last stern wheeler run of the year. Unable to operate efficiently in the ice-packed Mississippi, they are replaced by screw type boats and returned here for the winter for overhauling. Normally, the screw type boats operate between St. louis and new Orleans during the winter months, but operations will be extended to Chicago this year.\" Color photo by staff photographer Jack Zehrt.
