3 LOWER - MISSISSIPPI RIVER: 100000000000‘ —-The steamer Rapids, en route from the Arkansas River to Mem- phis, is aground up that stream. Capt. M. S. Brinkley is in charge. —-The steamer Kate Adams left Memphis Tuesday for O. K, Landing on her first trip up since she went to Mound City some time ago for repairs. --The J. N. Harbin, thoroughly overhauled, will re-enter the Mem- phis and Pine Bluff trade next Tues- day. - ' ——The New Orleans Daily States says: Some mighty fine and remarka- bly fast work was done about the Columbia under the direct supervis- ion of her clever skipper, Capt. E. G. Carter, during the 30 hours’ time she was in dock. Though the rain interfered and one night intervening, a force of some 30 caulkers went over her hull from stem to stern making a most complete job of the work during the short time she was (locked. And besides the owners of the Columbia have the satisfaction, that the dock people and others competent to judge pronounced her hull one of the best they had ever seen. * * * A Baton Rouge (La.) dispatch says: “The wholesale merchants of Baton Rouge have se- cured from the Steamboat Traffic Association a rate from Baton Rouge to Donaldsonville and intermediate points the same as a rate from New Orleans to Donaldsonville and inter- mediate points. Donaldsonville will be the dividing line between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. If New Orleans wishes to ship this side of Donaldsonville it will have to pay a higher rate than Baton Rouge. This has not been the case in the past.” Judging by the extensive prepara- tions and the time being consumed by the Dock Board in starting its work On the_upper wharf, it will be many a day before the steamboats will again have the use of that section of wharf. - —The Patten-Tully Transportation and Towboat Company have laid up all their towboats on account of low water. '—-The steamer Columbia, C. G. Carter in command, started out last Monday in the New Orleans and Up- per Coast trade, and leaves New Orleans every Monday and Thursda." at 12 m. for Donaldsonville, White- castle, Bayou Gould, Plaquemine, Baton Rouge, False River, Bayou Sara and Red Store Landing. Messrs. ‘Lord & McReake are her New Or- leans agents. —-The Georgia Lee, which has been on the Paducah marine ways for some time, will be ready to resume her trips in the Memphis and Vicks- burg trade in a very short time. ——The Memphis and Mound City ferryboat Hugo ran into asand bank at the north of Wolf River a few days ago under a full head of steam. She was only slightly damaged and was immediately pulled into the river by the Charles Organ. The engineer of the Hugo, Eddie Waller. had 50116 out on the fantail to adjust the ma- chinery, when an arm swung around and struck him, and he_was knocked into the river unbeknown to the Pilot, and the pilot’s bells to reverse the engine were unheeded. The en- WATERWAYS JOURNAL. gineer was picked up by'a row boat put out from the Charlesorgan and was taken back to his boat. ——The transfer steamer, Ste. Gene- vieve, which isbeing repaired at Mound City, Ill., was let into the river last Saturday. She has been on the ways about three months and has had her hull rebuilt. Her up- per works are being rebuilt and she will be ready for service at Ste. Gen- evieve, Mo., in about two weeks. ——'The Harvester is due to arrive at New Orleans with a tow of coal. —-The steamer City of Savannah, which has been running in the Mem- phisand Arkansas City trade, while the ’Kate Adams was laid up, has been turned over to her owners, the St. Louis and Tennessee River Pack- et Company. The Kate Adams re- sumed her trips Monday morning. This steamer may have the honor of carrying President William H. Taft from Memphis to New Orleans this fall when he makes his river trip from St. Louis to attend the Deep Waterways Convention to be held at New Orleans.
