When Sgt. Robert Byrd responded to a call last week at the California Garden Apartments, 2918 California Ave., two elderly women pressed three checks, some paper bills, and loose change into his hands. They also gave the Lynch Street District officer a note: "Dear Police Mans," it read. "We are real proud to have your Third District for our police department...the California Garden tenants. God bless you all." With the note were two pages with signatures of 24 contributors who wanted the money used toward a policeman's bulletproof vest.
