In the pre double stack container car era, when 45' trailers came into service the intermodal flatcars had to be retrofitted to carry two 45' trailers. SPRR introduced its service as SPRR Golden Piggyback Service with Golden Pig decals on its new 45' trailers.

Work will be performed at SPRR's RAMAC facility in Roseville, CA under a $6 million contract where SPRR Mechanical at RAMAC will perform the work and be paid by Greenbrier who will then lease the 45' Twin 45' trailer flatcars to SPRR Intermodal. Dick Lenz Assistant Chief Mechanical Officer-Car said the "work will use about a third of RAMAC's work force and is its first outside contract." Bill Schwoerer the Plant Manager at RAMAC said the program will show proof of our quality workmanship. R.D. Krebs President of SPT Co. said "We are taking unused cars and converting them into useful assets." George Erickson VP Equipment SPRR said that "the program recycles the railcars from the Automotive Unit to the Intermodal Unit increasing our Rate of Return on our investment."

Commemorative plaque issued to Robert Yates for his part in the SP Railroad Golden Pig Service Conversion Program. SPRR sold the obsolete multi-level railcars to Greenbrier who then contracted with SPRR Mechanical Department's RAMAC facility in Roseville, CA to convert the railcars into Twin 45' trailer flatcars for use in SPRR Golden Pig Service. RAMAC employees that had been laid off were brought back to work.
