M-113: St. Louis Imprints Collection

The St. Louis Imprints Collection at the St. Louis Mercantile Library contains approximately 8,000 items documenting the printing history of St. Louis, from its beginnings in 1808, to the end of World War II in 1945. Formats include books, broadsides, pamphlets, serials, prints and maps. The collection covers the widest array of topics, from history and law, to art and literature, and includes important first printings, such as the first book printed in English west of the Mississippi, The Laws of the Louisiana Territory (1808), and long runs of rare periodicals and newspapers for this region. A Live Buffalo Broadside
This early western exhibition broadside is a very early piece of St. Louis printing. The place and date of the exhibition are filled in in manuscript which states that the exhibition will be held at the stable of "Mr. Samuel Palmer in West Springfield on the 8th day of Inst. February 1816. West Springfield, Missouri, may not exist today but it was once a post-office in Shelby County, and once the site of a buffalo exhibition. The description below the buffalo reads: "This interesting animal was caught about Two Hundred miles above the Lead Mines, on the Missouri River. It is a female; is two years old, and is as large as a common sized Ox.", Possibly printed by Joseph Charless, the first printer west of the Mississippi, who set up shop in St. Louis in 1808.
Barr and Widen Company's Credit Guide for the Wholesale Trade

This is a guide to the collections of the St. Louis Museum as of the year 1859. It is an update to the earlier catalog of 1856. It includes an introduction by the museum's curator John Bates, statements on the Zeuglodon skeleton excavated by Albert C. Koch, the contents of 51 cases of stuffed birds and other animals, lists of statues and paintings, and other miscellaneous holdings. There is also a statement about the two Egyptian mummies on display previously owned by Joseph Smith of Nauvoo, Illinois.

Description of the Missourium or Missouri Leviathan
Albert Koch owned the St. Louis Museum until he sold it to William McPherson in 1841. During the later years of the 1830s he began traveling to excavate fossils to display in his museum. The Missourium, like his later Zeuglodon skeletons, was a specimen so great that Koch closed his museum and took it on a tour to Europe where it was eventually sold. This publication of Koch's description of the Missourium was published in St. Louis prior to his departure and accompanied his exhibitions.
