St. Louis U. goalie Ralph Kloiber slides across the ice to stop a shot by Lake Superior State's Gene Motuzas in first period action at the Arena Friday night. Motuzas slipped to the ice after taking the shot while Mario Faubert (3) of the Bills watched the play.
Potential power in the National League lineup was represented by this quartet of sluggers. From the left, are: Johnny Mize and Walker Cooper, former Cardinals now with the New York Giants; Ralph Kiner, slugging outfielder of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Stan Musial of the Cardinals. Mize and Kiner led both leagues in home run production last season with 51 circuit wallops and Musial currently leads both leagues in hitting with a .403 average.
Soggy Footing Kept the Players Slipping and Sliding at Sportsmans Park yesterday and the infielders had a rough afternoon. Here Marty Marion, Cardinal shortstop, is seen as he slipped and fell fielding Lloyd Waner's grounder in the second inning. He managed to throw George Fallon at second base, however, in time to force out Al Lopez.
Carl Steinmetz of Soldan High found an opening in the East St. Louis High line Friday afternoon at the Public Schools Stadium as the picture was snapped. Steinmetz, heading toward the left, got through for 5 yards before he was downed. The East Siders won the game, 6 to 0, although Steinmetz put up a hard fight for Soldan.

Soldan's Mike Basile didn't get very far on this first-quarter drive yesterday, but he did score later in the same period to start the Tiger's to a 25-20 victory over DuBourg. James Walther is the DuBourg player halting Basile, while John Hejnal (41) comes up to aid in the tackle.
Soldan football coach Leon Anton has found able replacements for All-District halfback Terry Fennell and All-State tackle Larron Jackson, who paced the Tigers to the Public High League championship last year. They're halfback Jerry Johnson (left) and tackle Robert Williams (right), who figure to give opponents plenty of anxious moments this season. Soldan is seeking its fifth PHL crown in seven years.
"But Giants' catcher Wes Westrum missed one small item in the general scheme of things-the ball-indicated at right. Result-Hemus was safe at home, scoring from second on Stan Musial's shot into right field in the second inning of yesterday afternoon's game. The umpire giving the glad news is Bill Stewart."
Gene Alford, a parcel of greased lightning, is shown gaining 10 yards for St. Louis against Pittsburgh yesterday. Pirates after him are Zaninelli (22), Ribble (just behind Alford), and Clark (27). This play was in the second quarter.
