The Report on Germany was presented by Pastor Durselen, of Ronsdorf, President of the Rhenish and Westphalian Young Men’s Union. ' “It is diflicult to comprehend in a short report a subject so large as that of the Young Men’s Associations of Germany. The societies existing in the South differ very materially from those of the North and of Central Germany. The former are designed more exclusively to promote the religious edification of the members. Many in the North, on the other hand, are only Institutions" for secular ins_truction. In Northern and Central Germany, however, there exist in considerable number, associations of Young Men conducted by those who are interested in their spiritual welfare," and which are very distinct therefore from the merely secular Institutions referred to. Of these -alone, I propose to give a very brief report. - _ “These Associations have combined in themselves several distinct objects. First, they are designed as Christian refuges for Young Men. The Young Man first entering into life, is exposed to a thousand perils, moral and other- wise. The Associations endeavour to furnish a means of protection from these dangers. Secondly, they are places of Christian nourishment and religious instruction‘ to Young Men. In childhood or in youth the seeds of Christian truth have perhaps been planted by the parent or the teacher, but it is still necessary to water them, and tend their after growth. The Christian Associations, therefore, through their Bible exercises, and their devotional and other meetings, aim at supplying the Young Man with this essential need. Thirdly, they are places of instruction. The Young Men attending them, belong principally to the class of artizans and other hand-labourers. Many have been much neglected as to their education in early youth. As they advance to manhood, this want is often bitterly felt. It is a great object therefore of the Associations, to provide those of their Members who may need it, with that instruction which will fit them for their civil duties. And fourthly, they are designed to connect Christianity with social life. In every man there exists a social instinct. This demands our consideration, that it may not be the means of leading a young maninto that which will poison him; but that, on the contrary, it may become the means to him of moral and spiritual blessing. The opportunity, therefore, should be offered to all of Christian society, and such an opportunity our Associations endeavour to furnish‘. Show less
