MacArthur Bridge is shut down because of its corrosion and deterioration. The city has determined that it was unsafe and that repairs would be too expensive.
The automobile deck of the 62-year-old bridge over the Mississippi River, south of the Poplar Street Bridge was ordered closed for emergency repairs last week by city street director when chunks of concrete paving began falling from the surface of the bridge.
Corrosion and deterioration are evident on older St. Louis bridges spanning the Mississippi River. Corroded lattice work is seen here on the MacArthur Bridge.
