"Among the early arrivals in the Cardinals camp were Mort Cooper, left, and Curt Davis, two of the team's leading hurlers last season. Cooper was the National League's strikeout king, while Davis' record of 24 victories was one of the best in the circuit. Both hope to improve on 1939 efforts and seen here at the end of their first drill it is noticeable that they are wasting no time getting into shape."
"The Cardinals were not scheduled to start spring training until tomorrow, but with a portion of his squad on hand Manager Ray Blades saw no reason for postponing matters and called an informal drill for those present here this afternoon. Blades, in the left foreground, iss een talking the situation over with the early arrivals."
