Left Wing, Uniform No. 12 Roy Kelly. Born Calgary, Alberta, Sept. 6, 1925. Left Wing, Shoots left. 5' 8 1/2", 155 lbs. Last Amateur Club - Trail (Juniors).
Obtained in a mid-season with Cleveland for Eddie Olson, Roy Kelly, high scoring forward came to the Flyers and immediately fit into the St. Louis picture. In his search for young talent, coach Johnny Mitchell was happy in being able to acquire the sharp shooting wingman who last season led the American Hockey League in goals scored with 46. A second all-star team selection at right wing last season, Kelly has been playing on the left side since coming to the Flyers and has shown that he can play with equal effectiveness on either flank.
Right Wing, Uniform No. 18 Steve Witiuk. Born Winnipeg, Man., January 8, 1929. Right Wing, Shoots Right, 5' 7 165 lbs. Last Amateur Club: Edmonton Flyers.
Fresh from the amateur ranks is Steve Witiuk, Flyer right winger who has made the big jump from amateur to the American League. Witiuk, a Chicago Black Hawk find, is with the Flyers on the strength of his outstanding amateur record plus a remarkable showing in training camp. Last year in senior amateur competition Witiuk scored 23 goals and 22 assists for a 45 point total for the season. A good skater and an effective back checker, Witiuk has all the earmarks of becoming a star and is rated a fine prospect.
Center, Uniform No. 8 Donald Macrae Morrison. Born Saskatoon, Sask., July 14, 1924. Center, Shoots Right, 5' 10 155 lbs. Last Amateur Club: Winnipeg RCAF.
Another of the players assigned to the Flyers this year via the working agreement with the Chicago Black Hawks is Don Morrison, shifty center ice man who is being counted upon to give the Flyers much needed strength down to the middle. Morrison is a seven year veteran in pro hockey and is rated one of the cleverest play-making centers in the game.
This Flyer Trio, leading scorers for the team last season, will start tonight against the Cleveland Barons in the first game of the American Hockey League season for the Airmen. From left: Al Baccari, Cliff Simpson and Billy McComb line up in a scrimmage session. At right is Gordon "Butch" Pearson, outstanding rookie, who will make his AHL debut tonight with the Flyers.
Right Wing, Uniform No. 7 Eric Pogue. Born Agincourt, Ont., May 8, 1929. Right Wing, Shoots Right, 5' 10" 160 lbs. Last Amateur Club: Oshawa Generals.
Another ex-Cleveland player obtained by the Flyers in an early season deal for veteran center Red Doran, is Eric Pogue, swift moving St. Louis right winger. A standout in amateur hockey, Pogue turned pro with Pittsburgh in 1948-1949 and saw little action that first year. Last season after a brief stay with the Hornets Pogue was sent to their Los Angeles farm team and played in 25 games for the Monarchs. In the playoffs he really caught fire and in 17 games scored 10 goals and 9 assists. A consistent scorer since hitting a regular berth in the lineup, the energetic Pogue has quickly established himself as a favorite with the fans and his aggressive play has brought him well deserved popularity.
Right Defense, Uniform No. 5 Brent MacNab. Born Vermillion, Atla., Jan. 15, 1931. Right Defense, Shoots Right, 5' 9 1/2" 185 lbs. Last amateur club: Calgary Stampeeders.
One of the training camp sensations on the St. Louis Flyers team this year is young Brent MacNab a hard hitting defenseman who will be playing his first season of professional hockey with the Flyers. MacNab caught the eye of Coach Mud Bruneteau with his rocking body checks and heads-up defensive play and proved in four weeks of pre-season training that he was ready to play pro hockey in the American League. MacNab is making the big jump from amateur to professional hockey but it is believed that he has the ability to hold down a regular berth with the Flyers this season.
Center, Uniform No. 19 Sid Finney. Born Bainbridge, Ireland May 1, 1929. Center, Shoots Left, 5' 11 158 lbs. Last amateur club: Calgary Stampeeders.
Another of the players brought up with the Flyers under the new A.H.L. amateur ruling is Sid Finney, shifty center who seems destined for stardom in the pro league. The Irish born pivot man, who now makes his home in Calgary, Atla., showed all the finesse and polish of a seasoned veteran during the training season and it was due largely to his impressive amateur record plus his overall performance in training camp that prompted the Chicago Black Hawks to turn him pro and assign him to St. Louis.
Left Wing, Uniform No. 17 Glen Robert Sonmor. Born Moose Jaw, Sask., April 22, 1929. Left Wing, Shoots Right, 5' 11 165 lbs. Last Amateur Club: Brandon Wheat Kings (Jrs.).
Regarded as a dependable 'workhouse', rugged Glen Sonmor is in his junior year of professional hockey. Sold to the Flyers by the Cleveland Barons this past summer, Sonmor is rated as a good two-way player and has plenty of spirit and hustle. His determination is one of his big assets and he should prove before too long that he will be one of the key players in the St. Louis plan of attack.
Right Wing, Uniform No.16 Harry Taylor. Born St. James, Man., March 28, 1926. Right Wing, Shoots Right, 5' 8 164 lbs. Last amateur club: Winnipeg Monarchs.
Harry Taylor will be playing his first season with the Flyers coming to them from the Cleveland Barons in exchange for Paul Gladu. Taylor, though not a high scorer, is considered a good back checker and is better known for his defensive ability. This will be his sixth year of pro competition and his famous "hip" check is one of his better known trademarks.
Center, Uniform No. 10 Patrick Anthony Lundy. Born Saskatoon, Sask., May 31, 1924. Center, Shoots Right, 5' 10 1/2" 171 lbs. Last amateur club: Saskatoon Elks (Sr.).
As a result of the working agreement between Flyers and Chicago Black Hawks, Pat Lundy is wearing a St. Louis uniform this year. A sharp shooting center, and considered a first class play maker, Lundy is a veteran of six seasons in the N.H.L. and his experience should be a helpful asset to the Flyers this year.
Pat Lundy, Flyer center, plays footsie with the puck while disrupting the efforts of a Bison iceman in the American Hockey League game last night at the Arena. Gordie Pennell (15), hopefully offers a third stick to the confusion, while his Buffalo teammate, Pete Durham (3), accompanies Steve Hyrmnak, Flyer defenseman, in a skater's waltz. Buffalo won, 3 to 1.
The building shown was built in 1908 by St. Joseph Lead Company to house a YMCA, company store and “assembly” hall. The YMCA and Company store later became the home of the Engineering and Accounting Departments for St. Joe. A part of the Company Store was converted to a bowling alley, but the Assembly Hall remains. Today it is know as the Heritage Hall Ballroom.
