Globe to start afternoon paper--Jeff and Debbie Gluck announce plans to start publishing a new afternoon newspaper in St. Louis. The paper will be a separtate paper from the globe with a new name and format to be decided. It should publication in 3 weeks.

"United Auto Workers at the Carter Carburetor company have accepted a $1-per-hour pay cut, under a three-year contract that signals a 2 1/2 -year delay in the company's announced closing of two plants here, union representatives said. In return for the delayed closings, UAW members agreed to a cut in their average wage as of Aug. 2 from $10.17 to $9.17 per hour, said Jerry Tucker, international representative for the UAW. Wages rose almost immediately to about $9.40 because of a cost-of-living raise, he added. Wages will decrease another 10 cents per hour next year, but cost-of-living increases should make that up, Tucker said."
