The shoe with the hole belonged to Dwight "Ike" Eisenhower's opponent, Adlai Stevenson II, who was photographed on the campaign trail with a hole in his shoe. Stevenson considered the image a sign of his frugal nature, but opponents used it as a symbol of his inability to care for himself, much less for a country.
