Two local boys on the American League squad got together for some baseball chatter before the game. Walter (Hoot) Evers of Collinsville (left) explained to Larry (Yogi) Berra how he gets his power at the plate. Evers hit a home run to account for the first American League run.
St. Louis Browns' president Don Barnes congratulates Mike Kreevich, one of the heroes, after the St. Louis team clinched the American League pennant in 1944 by beating the Yankees, 5-2, at Sportsmans Park. Righthander Jim Bunning of the Detroit Tigers started the game for the American League All-Stars. Bunning held the Nationals scoreless for three innings and was relieved by Billy Loes of the Baltimore Orioles in the Fourth (sic).
