"The design of the downtown Convention Center was approved by the City Plan Commission Monday with the recommendation that the exterior walls be of precast concrete panels with a ribbed-face finish. The architects for the project, Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum and Jenkins-Fleming, had proposed either concrete or metal panels for the exterior walls. Norman Murdoch, director of the commission, said he felt that ribbed-faced concrete would be far more attractive, and he strongly favored it if costs could be kept within the construction budget. The Convention Center will feature a column-free 240,000 square feet of convention and exhibition space, the equivalent of five football fields in size."
"Where Convention Center Would Be. Mayor Cervantes announced plans Wednesday for a $75 million convention plaza complex in the DeSoto-Carr urban renewal area downtown. Keystone of the plaza would be a convention center in the enclosed area, bounded by Delmar boulevard and 7th, 9th and Cole streets. This view is east toward the river with 12th street at bottom."
"Work on the $34 million Gateway Convention Center, right foreground, is one month ahead of its scheduled June 25, 1977, opening, said center Director Eugene L. Beckerle. Beckerle praised 'tremendous cooperation' by labor and said the center is near the 60 per cent completion mark. Construction of the hotel at left is expected to be completed at the same time as the center."
"Marking completion of the first construction phase of the St. Louis Gateway Convention and Exhibition Center, flags fly from the downtown center's columns Friday. Mayor John H. Poelker said the $34 million project is 30 days ahead of schedule."
"James Welsh, left, of the American Newspaper Publishers Association, surveys Convention Center with Eugene L. Beckerle, center, center director, and Mayor John H. Poelker."
"Although far from completed, the new downtown St. Louis Convention Center already has 33 definite convention bookings and 74 tentative bookings, according to the Convention and Visitors Bureau of Greater St. Louis. The center is expected to be finished in about two years."
