Construction of the new basketball arena began in 1969, officially opening in 1972. Construction strikes and the lack of funds caused the auditorium's slow development. The 1971 Kansas-Missouri game was supposed to close Brewer Fieldhouse as the basketball arena, but Hearnes hadn't yet been fully built., Savitar, 1971. page 119.
