"Bemis Bro. Bag Co bldg. at 4th and Poplar--- was purchased in 1885 by the company from James T. Drummond who had used it as a tobacco warehouse. The first location of the company was at the foot of Cherry St. where 3 girls and one man was employed, the second was at #1 Commerce st. in 1858. In 1890 the company employed several hundred people and now has some 10,000 employees. The building was has almost been doubled in size is still standing and is occupied as a factory by the same company."
