HISTORY One of the most dynamic parts of Mizzou history is University's athletic complexes. Ranging from simple, separate men and women's gyms a hundred years ago to the multi-million dollar Recreation Center on campus today. Many of these buildings have undergone a series of renovations, so this album strives to capture what these buildings looked like.
This part of the Savitar collection will go over early men and womens' gymnasiums, Rothwell Gym, and the Student Recreation Center.
HISTORY Long before Mizzou constructed the multi-million dollar Student Recreation Center, these were the only gyms students had access to. Gyms were segregated by sex, and were located in single rooms--very different than the facilities today.

HISTORY Welcome to Rothwell gymnasium. Originally costing $70,000, Rothwell added several facilities that the University lacked before. New trophy rooms, tennis courts, and practice fields were added in and around Rothwell. Interestingly, though, the University had not built a new women's gymnasium at the time. However, in 1904, the University had plans to build a gym for women, McKee Gymnasium.

HISTORY It took five years of planning and consulting to work out a plan for the Student Recreation Center, an expansion triple the size of the previous recreation center. The Student Recreation Center expanded fitness space, aerobic and martial arts studios, new locker rooms, new sauna rooms, and better ventilation.
